USCIS Issues an Updated I-9 Form

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services issued an updated I-9 Form on July 17, 2017.  The form, which can be found here:, will be mandatory for employers to use by September 18, 2017.

What Changed?

The change is minimal.  When I looked at the form, I almost did not notice the revision.  The storage and retention rules have remained unchanged.  The change relates to page 3 of the document, “Lists of Acceptable Documents”.  List C or Documents that Establish Employment Authorization have been revised.  Also, the Handbook for Employers M-274 has been revised and the reference to this handbook has been updated.

How to Tell if My Company Is Using the Correct Document?

If you want to double-check that you are using the correct I-9 Form you should observe the following two areas:

Top Right-

The top right of the form should have “OMB No. 1615-0047 Expires 08/31/2019”

Bottom Left-

The bottom left of the form should have “Form I-9 07/17/17 N”.  The bottom left is the most important detail to note because the previous form has the same OMB No. and the same expiration date.
